Antananarivo (often shortened to Tana) is the capital and largest city of Madagascar, home to approximately 3 million residents. It operates on East Africa Time (EAT, UTC+3), a fixed year-round offset. Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island — about the size of France — and one of Earth's most extraordinary biodiversity hotspots. Approximately 90% of its wildlife exists nowhere else on Earth, including all 107 species of lemurs (the primates found only in Madagascar), the enormous Baobab Avenue, the otherworldly Avenue of the Baobabs, and hundreds of species of chameleons, tenrecs, and plants. Antananarivo sits at 1,280 metres elevation on a ridge dominating the central highlands, with terraced rice paddies cascading down the surrounding hillsides. The Rova of Antananarivo (Queen's Palace), burned in 1995 and slowly being rebuilt, was the royal palace of the Merina Kingdom. Madagascar was a French colony until 1960.
