Astana (formerly Nur-Sultan, before that Akmola, before that Tselinograd) is the capital of Kazakhstan, home to approximately 1.2 million residents. It shares Kazakhstan's timezone (ALMT, UTC+5) with Almaty. Astana became the capital in 1997 when Kazakhstan moved its capital from Almaty to this planned city in the steppe, at the time a modest town of 300,000. The transformation has been extraordinary — Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa designed the new capital's master plan, and world-renowned architects including Norman Foster have left their mark with futuristic buildings. The Baiterek Tower (105 metres), a monument symbolising a mythological tree of life, has become the city's iconic symbol. Astana hosted Expo 2017 on the theme of Future Energy. Kazakhstan spans 9 time zones but uses just two — the country's vast steppe geography includes the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the world's first and largest operational space launch facility, from which Sputnik and Gagarin were launched.
Kazakhstan does not observe DST. ALMT (UTC+5) is fixed year-round. The live clock displayed above reflects the real-time local time currently in Astana, making it an ideal tool for international business coordination, travel planning, remote work scheduling, and staying connected across time zones.
