Banda Aceh is the capital of Aceh province at the northern tip of Sumatra island, home to approximately 270,000 residents. Like all of Java and Sumatra, it operates on Western Indonesia Time (WIB, UTC+7). Banda Aceh is one of the most historically significant cities in Southeast Asian Islam — it was the capital of the Sultanate of Aceh, which was one of the most powerful Islamic kingdoms in Southeast Asia from the 16th to 18th centuries and was the main point of Islamic conversion for much of the region. Aceh maintains a special autonomous status within Indonesia, with Islamic sharia law applied as a regional overlay on Indonesian national law. On December 26, 2004, Banda Aceh and its surrounding coastline was the closest populated area to the epicentre of the Indian Ocean Earthquake (magnitude 9.1–9.3) — the deadliest tsunami in recorded history, killing approximately 167,000 people in Aceh alone (228,000 total globally). A ship carried inland 4 km by the tsunami and a tsunami museum are powerful memorials.
