Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh and one of India's greenest cities, home to approximately 2.5 million people. Like all Indian cities, it operates on Indian Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30). Bhopal is known as the 'City of Lakes' — two large artificial lakes (Upper Lake/Bada Talab and Lower Lake) dominate the city's geography and were built in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj. The city is forever linked to one of history's worst industrial disasters — the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of December 2–3, 1984, in which a pesticide plant owned by Union Carbide (now Dow Chemical) leaked methyl isocyanate gas, killing an estimated 15,000–20,000 people immediately and causing long-term health impacts to hundreds of thousands. The Bhopal Memorial Hospital continues to treat survivors. The city also has remarkable historical depth — the Bhimbetka rock shelters, 45 km from Bhopal, contain cave paintings over 30,000 years old and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sanchi Stupa, the world's oldest stone structure (3rd century BC), is an hour away.
