Brasília is the capital of Brazil, a purpose-built planned city completed in just 41 months and inaugurated on April 21, 1960 — one of the most audacious urban planning projects of the 20th century. Home to approximately 3.1 million residents, it shares Brasília Time (BRT, UTC-3) with the rest of Brazil's southeast. Designed by urban planner Lúcio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer, Brasília's layout when viewed from the air resembles an airplane (or a bird) — the fuselage being the monumental axis with government buildings, the wings being residential superblocks. The entire Pilot Plan of Brasília is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1987) — remarkably, it became the youngest city ever to receive that designation at just 27 years old. Niemeyer's iconic curved buildings — the National Congress with its twin towers and two bowls, the Presidential Palace (Palácio da Alvorada), the Supreme Court, and the Cathedral of Brasília — represent a pinnacle of modernist architecture.
Brazil suspended DST in 2019. BRT (UTC-3) is now fixed year-round.
