Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan, purpose-built in the 1960s as a modern planned capital to replace Karachi. Home to approximately 1.1 million city residents and 2 million in the Islamabad-Rawalpindi metro area, it operates on Pakistan Standard Time (PKT, UTC+5). Islamabad is one of the most planned and cleanest cities in South Asia, designed by Greek architect Constantinos Apostolou Doxiadis using a grid system divided into residential, commercial, educational, and diplomatic sectors. The Faisal Mosque, situated at the foot of the Margalla Hills, is one of the largest mosques in the world and an iconic symbol of the city. Pakistan Monument and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) host all federal government institutions. Islamabad enjoys a more moderate climate than most Pakistani cities due to its elevation at the foot of the Himalayas. The city is close to the ancient city of Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important centers of Buddhist learning in ancient times.
Pakistan does not currently observe DST. PKT (UTC+5) is fixed year-round.
