Malabo is the capital of Equatorial Guinea, located on Bioko Island in the Gulf of Guinea, home to approximately 300,000 residents. It operates on West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1). Equatorial Guinea is Africa's only Spanish-speaking country and one of sub-Saharan Africa's smallest nations. The discovery of offshore oil in 1995 transformed the country from one of Africa's poorest to having one of its highest GDP per capita figures — yet extreme inequality means most citizens remain impoverished while a small elite, including the ruling Nguema family, amassed vast wealth. Equatorial Guinea is building a new capital city, Oyala (now called Ciudad de la Paz), in the interior of the mainland, though progress has been slow. The country's mainland (Río Muni) and the island of Bioko have distinct environments — the island has extraordinary biodiversity including drill monkeys and sea turtles. The country switched from the Portuguese to Spanish sphere and later briefly used French before settling on Spanish as its primary official language.
Equatorial Guinea does not observe DST. WAT (UTC+1) is fixed year-round.
