Managua is the capital and largest city of Nicaragua, home to approximately 1.1 million residents. It operates on Central Standard Time (CST, UTC-6) year-round without DST. Managua sits on the southern shore of Lake Managua (Lago de Xolotlán) and between two active volcanoes. The city was devastated by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake on December 23, 1972 — the disaster killed 4,000–10,000 people and destroyed 90% of the city centre, which was never fully rebuilt, giving central Managua its unusual lack of a traditional downtown. Nicaragua is Central America's largest country and one of its most culturally rich — it was the site of one of Latin America's most significant 20th-century revolutions, the Sandinista Revolution (1979), which overthrew the Somoza dictatorship. Lake Nicaragua (Lago de Nicaragua) is home to freshwater bull sharks and the only freshwater lake in the world with ocean fish. The colonial cities of Granada and León are accessible from Managua.
