Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique, home to approximately 1.7 million residents. It operates on Central Africa Time (CAT, UTC+2), a fixed year-round offset. Maputo is a Portuguese-speaking (Lusophone) capital facing Maputo Bay and the Indian Ocean. Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975 after a decade of armed liberation struggle and then experienced a devastating 15-year civil war (1977–1992). Since peace, the country has grown rapidly and Maputo has emerged as one of southern Africa's more vibrant capitals. The city's colonial-era architecture — Portuguese-style tiled buildings, wide avenues, and outdoor cafés — gives it a distinctive character among African capitals. The 2.3 km Maputo–Katembe Bridge (2018), the longest suspension bridge in Africa, has transformed connections between the capital and the southern parts of the country. The nearby Maputo Special Reserve protects one of Africa's last populations of elephant, lion, and wild dog within proximity to a major city.
