Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province and one of China's most historically significant cities, home to approximately 9.3 million residents. Like all of China, it operates on China Standard Time (CST, UTC+8). Nanjing served as China's capital multiple times throughout history, most recently from 1912 to 1949 for the Republic of China — it was also one of the world's greatest cities during the 14th and 15th centuries under the early Ming Dynasty, with a population exceeding 1 million. The 35 km Nanjing City Wall, built in the early Ming Dynasty starting 1366, is the world's longest surviving premodern city wall. Nanjing carries the tragic memory of the Nanjing Massacre (December 1937–January 1938), in which Japanese Imperial forces killed an estimated 200,000–300,000 Chinese civilians and prisoners of war — one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century, commemorated at the Memorial Hall of the Victims. The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum on Purple Mountain is one of China's most visited monuments.
