Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, home to approximately 1.1 million residents. Like all of Japan, it operates on Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+9). Sendai's Tanabata Festival in August, featuring enormous paper and fabric decorations suspended along shopping streets, is one of Japan's three major festivals.
