Ulan-Ude is the capital of the Republic of Buryatia in Russia, home to approximately 440,000 residents. It operates on Irkutsk Standard Time (IRKT, UTC+8), permanent since Russia abolished DST in 2014. Ulan-Ude is situated near the southern tip of Lake Baikal — the world's deepest lake, holding 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is the cultural capital of the Buryat people — the largest indigenous group native to Russia — whose culture, language, and Buddhist religion (Tibetan Buddhism arrived here in the 17th century) are distinct from mainstream Russian culture. The Ivolginsky Datsan (Buddhist monastery), located 30 km from the city, is the most significant Buddhist monastery in Russia and contains the preserved body of the 12th Khambo Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, who died in 1927 and was exhumed in 2002 showing no signs of decomposition. The city's main square features the world's largest head sculpture — a giant Lenin head weighing 42 tonnes.
