Yaren is the de facto capital of Nauru, the world's third-smallest country by area (21 km²) and smallest island nation, home to approximately 2,000 residents in the district and 10,500 in the country. It operates on Nauru Time (NRT, UTC+12). Nauru is the world's only country with no official capital — government functions are spread across the island. The country's story is one of the most remarkable in the world: in the 1970s and early 1980s, Nauru's citizens were among the world's wealthiest per capita due to phosphate mining (the entire island is essentially a phosphate rock). The country established the world's first sovereign wealth fund in 1968 to manage this wealth. However, the phosphate was exhausted by the 1990s and the Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust was depleted through mismanagement, leaving the country nearly bankrupt. Today Nauru hosts an Australian immigration detention centre and receives income from fishing licence fees. The island's centre is a vast wasteland of exposed coral pinnacles — the mined-out landscape.
