Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about time differences.
How is the time difference between two cities calculated?
The calculator finds the UTC offset of each city at the exact moment you choose, using the IANA time zone database, and subtracts them. Because it uses the real offset for that date, daylight saving time is included automatically.
Why does the time difference change during the year?
Many countries move their clocks forward or back at different dates, or not at all. For example, the gap between London and New York changes for a few weeks each spring and autumn, when one country has changed its clocks and the other has not. The year table shows each month.
What does ahead and behind mean?
A city that is ahead has a later clock time. If Delhi is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of London, it is already 14:30 in Delhi when it is 09:00 in London, and the date there may be one day later.
Can I check a past or future date and time?
Yes. Turn off the live time by choosing a date and time in the first city. The result, the year table and the hour-by-hour table all update for that moment. Dates between 1970 and 2100 are supported.
What are working hours in the overlap table?
Working hours are 09:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Friday in each city's local time. The overlap line shows the exact period when both cities are inside working hours on the chosen day.
How can I share a comparison?
Use Copy link. The address contains both cities and, if you chose a date and time, that moment as well, so anyone who opens it sees the same comparison.
