Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Unix time.
What is Unix time?
Unix time is the number of seconds that have passed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, called the Unix epoch. It is the same number everywhere in the world, and time zones only change how that moment is written as a calendar date.
How does the converter tell seconds from milliseconds?
In Auto mode it looks at the size of the number: below 100 billion is seconds, below 100 trillion is milliseconds, below 100 quadrillion is microseconds, and anything larger is nanoseconds. A current timestamp has 10 digits in seconds and 13 digits in milliseconds. You can also choose the unit yourself.
What is the Year 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time in a signed 32-bit integer run out at 2147483647 seconds, which is 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Using 64-bit integers avoids the problem.
Does Unix time include leap seconds?
No. Unix time treats every day as exactly 86,400 seconds, so leap seconds are not counted, and a second numbered 60 cannot be represented.
Can timestamps be negative?
Yes. A negative timestamp is a moment before 1 January 1970 UTC. For example, -1 is 23:59:59 UTC on 31 December 1969. This tool supports dates from the year 1583 to 9999.
What happens with local times that do not exist or happen twice?
When clocks go forward, some local times do not exist, and when clocks go back, some happen twice. The date to timestamp converter detects both cases, tells you, and shows the earlier of two moments for a repeated time.
