Abuja is the capital of Nigeria and a purpose-built planned city, home to approximately 3.6 million residents in the Federal Capital Territory. It shares West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1) with Lagos. Abuja replaced Lagos as Nigeria's capital in 1991 — the move was motivated by Lagos's overcrowding and its southern coastal location, far from Nigeria's geographical centre. Abuja was designed by American architects Kenzo Tange (Japanese) and American firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The Nigerian National Mosque (with its 100-metre-tall minaret) and the Nigerian National Christian Centre sit facing each other in the capital, symbolising Nigeria's deliberate attempt at religious balance in a country roughly equally divided between Muslims in the north and Christians in the south. Aso Rock, a 400-metre-tall monolith of granite, towers behind the Presidential Villa (State House) and defines Abuja's dramatic geographic setting. The Transcorp Hilton Abuja was for decades the main venue for African summits and diplomatic events.
Nigeria does not observe DST. WAT (UTC+1) is fixed year-round. The live clock displayed above reflects the real-time local time currently in Abuja, making it an ideal tool for international business coordination, travel planning, remote work scheduling, and staying connected across time zones.
