Apia is the capital of the Independent State of Samoa (not to be confused with American Samoa), home to approximately 37,000 residents in the capital area. Samoa operates on Samoa Standard Time (WST, UTC+13), and uniquely observes daylight saving time at UTC+14 — one of only two inhabited places in the world at that extreme offset (along with the Line Islands of Kiribati). In 2011, Samoa made a historic decision to skip an entire day — jumping from Thursday December 29 to Saturday December 31, 2011, by crossing the International Date Line — switching from being one of the last places on Earth to see each day to one of the first. This was driven by economic alignment with Australia and New Zealand, Samoa's main trading partners. Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, spent his final years in Apia and is buried on a nearby mountaintop — his home, Villa Vailima, is now a museum.
Observes WSDT (UTC+14) from last Sunday in September to first Sunday in April — one of only two places to use UTC+14.
