Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, situated on the Caspian Sea coast, home to approximately 2.3 million residents. It operates on Azerbaijan Time (AZT, UTC+4), a fixed year-round offset since DST was suspended in 2016. Baku is one of the world's most oil-rich cities — the Absheron Peninsula on which it sits has been producing oil since at least the 10th century, and Azerbaijan is often cited as the birthplace of the modern oil industry. The Nobel family (of the Nobel Prize) owned oil fields near Baku in the late 19th century. The city's iconic Flame Towers — three skyscrapers shaped like flames and clad in LEDs — light up the skyline in reference to Azerbaijan's epithet, the 'Land of Fire.' Baku's historic Inner City (Icherisheher) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, containing the 12th-century Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Baku hosted the 2015 European Games and 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time.
Azerbaijan suspended DST in 2016. AZT (UTC+4) is now fixed year-round.
