Dili is the capital and largest city of Timor-Leste (East Timor), home to approximately 280,000 residents. It operates on Timor-Leste Time (TLT, UTC+9), a fixed year-round offset. Timor-Leste is the world's newest country, gaining independence in 2002 after a turbulent history — it was a Portuguese colony until 1975, then invaded and occupied by Indonesia for 24 years (1975–1999) in one of the late 20th century's most tragic conflicts, in which an estimated 100,000–180,000 Timorese died. A 1999 UN referendum led to independence, followed by Indonesian militia violence and an Australian-led peacekeeping intervention. The country has significant offshore oil and gas reserves in the Timor Sea (the Sunrise gas field, one of the region's largest), though revenue management and economic diversification remain challenges. Cristo Rei (Christ the King) statue near Dili, standing 27 metres on a hilltop, is one of the world's tallest Christ statues. Timor-Leste has extraordinary marine biodiversity — the Coral Triangle surrounding the island is the world's richest for coral reef life.
