Faisalabad is Pakistan's third-largest city and its industrial and textile capital, home to approximately 3.6 million residents. Like all Pakistani cities, it operates on Pakistan Standard Time (PKT, UTC+5). Faisalabad was founded in 1880 by the British colonial administration, originally as Lyallpur, and was renamed after King Faisal of Saudi Arabia in 1977. The city's layout is unique — its eight main bazaars radiate out from the central clock tower (Ghanta Ghar) in a pattern resembling the Union Jack flag, an intended tribute to the British Empire visible from aerial photography. Faisalabad is Pakistan's Manchester — its textile industry produces enormous quantities of cotton and synthetic fabrics for both domestic use and export. The city houses hundreds of textile mills and contributes over 20% of Pakistan's total industrial output. Faisalabad Agricultural University is one of Pakistan's leading agricultural research institutions, reflecting the city's role as the hub of Pakistan's agricultural heartland.
