Freetown is the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone, home to approximately 1.2 million residents. It operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0). Freetown was founded in 1792 as a settlement for freed Black loyalists from Nova Scotia and freed slaves from Britain — its name literally means 'town of the free.' The city's harbour — one of the largest natural harbours in the world — made it a crucial port for the British Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron, which intercepted slave ships during the 19th century. Liberated Africans freed from these intercepted ships settled in Sierra Leone, creating the unique Creole (Krio) culture and language that defines Freetown's identity today. Sierra Leone suffered a devastating civil war from 1991 to 2002 and the Ebola virus epidemic of 2014–2016, yet has shown remarkable resilience. The country is the world's 4th largest diamond producer, and rutile (titanium ore) production is also significant. The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary near Freetown protects rescued chimpanzees.
