Gdansk (historically Danzig) is Poland's principal seaport and sixth-largest city, home to approximately 490,000 residents. It operates on Central European Time (CET/CEST). Gdansk has two defining moments of world history. First, it was here that WWII began — on September 1, 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein fired on the Polish military transit depot at Westerplatte, marking the first shots of the war. Second, and perhaps more positively, it was in Gdansk that the Solidarity (Solidarność) trade union was born in 1980 — when workers at the Lenin Shipyard, led by Lech Wałęsa, went on strike and created the first independent trade union in the Soviet bloc, ultimately triggering the collapse of communist regimes across Eastern Europe. The European Solidarity Centre, built on the site of the old shipyard, is one of Europe's most significant modern museums. Gdansk's colourful Dutch-influenced Hanseatic townhouses line the Royal Way — many are faithful post-WWII reconstructions.
