Isfahan (Esfahan) is Iran's third-largest city and one of the world's most beautiful historic cities, home to approximately 2.2 million residents. It shares Iran Standard Time (IRST/IRDT) with Tehran. Isfahan was the capital of the Safavid Empire at its zenith under Shah Abbas I (reigned 1587–1629), who transformed it into one of the world's great cities. The Persian proverb 'Isfahan nesf-e jahan' — 'Isfahan is half the world' — captures its historical grandeur. Naqsh-e Jahan Square (Imam Square), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest medieval squares in the world, is flanked by the magnificent Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque (with its extraordinary tilework), the Ali Qapu Palace, the Shah Mosque (Imam Mosque), and the Grand Bazaar — a masterpiece of Safavid urban planning. The bridges over the Zayandeh River (Si-o-se Pol with 33 arches, Khaju Bridge) are exceptional examples of Safavid architecture. Isfahan is also Iran's main steel and industrial centre.
