Kobe is a port city in Hyogo Prefecture, part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area (Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe), home to approximately 1.5 million residents. Like all of Japan, it operates on Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+9). Kobe was one of Japan's first ports opened to foreign trade after the Meiji Restoration, and its historic foreign settlement (Kitano-cho) still features Victorian-era Western merchant houses. This cosmopolitan history made Kobe Japan's most international city for decades — Western fashions, beef (Kobe beef is the world's most premium wagyu cattle raised in the surrounding Hyogo hills), and jazz music all found early footholds here. The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (January 17, 1995, magnitude 6.9) killed 6,434 people and devastated Kobe — yet the city rebuilt remarkably within a decade, becoming a global model of post-disaster urban recovery. The Port of Kobe is one of Japan's busiest. The Kobe Luminarie light festival, held annually in December in memory of earthquake victims, is one of Japan's most beautiful light events.
