Medina (Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah — 'The Radiant City') is Islam's second-holiest city after Mecca, home to approximately 1.5 million permanent residents. It operates on Arabia Standard Time (AST, UTC+3). Medina is where the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca in 622 AD (the Hijra — the event from which the Islamic calendar begins), established the first Muslim community, and where he died and is buried. The Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi), built by the Prophet himself, stands over his tomb and is the second-largest mosque in the world — visited by millions of pilgrims annually. Like Mecca, Medina is restricted to Muslims only in its central areas. The city is also home to the Masjid al-Quba, the first mosque ever built in Islam (622 AD). The Hejaz Railway, an Ottoman-era line connecting Damascus to Medina (built 1900–1908 to facilitate the Hajj), partially survives as a historical artefact.
