Minsk is the capital and largest city of Belarus, home to approximately 2 million residents. It operates on Further-Eastern European Time (FET, UTC+3), made permanent in 2011 when Belarus stopped observing Daylight Saving Time — aligning it with Moscow rather than other Eastern European neighbours. Belarus is a landlocked country located in the very heart of Europe, bordering Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. Minsk was almost completely destroyed during World War II — an estimated 80% of the city was razed — and was rebuilt in the monumental Soviet Stalinist architectural style, giving it one of the most architecturally coherent Soviet-era cityscapes in the former USSR. The city was designated a 'Hero City' by the Soviet Union in recognition of its resistance during WWII. Today Belarus is one of the few remaining planned economies in Europe, though it has a significant industrial base in machinery, chemicals, and agriculture. The Mir Castle and Nesvizh Castle in the Minsk region are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Belarus permanently switched to UTC+3 (FET) in 2011 and does not observe DST.
