Nara was Japan's first permanent capital (710–784 AD) and today is a city of approximately 360,000 residents famous for its ancient temples and free-roaming deer. Nara's short tenure as capital left it less commercially developed than Kyoto or Osaka, giving it an intimate, unhurried quality rare among Japanese historic cities.
