Peshawar is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan and one of Asia's oldest cities, home to approximately 2.3 million residents. Like all Pakistani cities, it operates on Pakistan Standard Time (PKT, UTC+5). Peshawar was one of antiquity's most important cities — it served as the Gandharan capital under the Kushan Empire (1st–3rd century AD), when the region was a major centre of Buddhist civilisation. The Peshawar Museum holds one of the world's finest collections of Gandharan art. The city guards the eastern end of the Khyber Pass — the historic gateway between the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia that has been traversed by Alexander the Great, Mongols, Mughals, and British forces. Peshawar's Qissa Khwani Bazaar (Street of Storytellers) is one of the most atmospheric and historic bazaars in South Asia. The city was severely impacted by terrorism in the 2000s–2010s but has seen improving stability.
Pakistan does not currently observe DST. PKT (UTC+5) is fixed year-round.
