Salvador is the capital of Bahia state and Brazil's third-largest city by metropolitan population, home to approximately 2.9 million city residents and 4.1 million in the metro. It shares Brasília Time (BRT, UTC-3). Salvador was Brazil's first capital (1549–1763) and the most important port in the Atlantic slave trade — more African slaves arrived in Salvador than anywhere else in the Americas, making it today the largest city outside Africa with a majority African-origin population. This heritage profoundly shaped Brazilian culture: Candomblé (an African diasporic religion), capoeira (a martial art-dance form), acarajé (a street food), and axé music all originated or flourished here. The historic Pelourinho neighbourhood, with its colonial Baroque churches and colourful Portuguese tiled buildings on a clifftop above the Bay of All Saints, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salvador's Carnival is one of Brazil's most electrifying — the Trio Elétrico (giant mobile music truck) tradition that originated here has become global.
Brazil suspended DST in 2019. BRT (UTC-3) is now fixed year-round.
