Stanley (Puerto Argentino in Spanish) is the capital of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, home to approximately 2,200 residents. It operates on Falkland Islands Standard Time (FKST, UTC-3), a fixed year-round offset since 2010. The Falkland Islands are the subject of one of the most significant international territorial disputes of the 20th century — Argentina invaded in April 1982, triggering the 73-day Falklands War with Britain, in which 649 Argentine and 255 British servicemen died before Britain retook the islands. The Argentine claim (calling them the Malvinas) remains active. Despite being nearly 12,800 km from London, the islands are British and their 3,500 residents voted 99.8% to remain so in a 2013 referendum. The islands have a larger sheep population than human population, significant penguin colonies (over 500,000 penguins), and are a prime wildlife destination. Oil reserves discovered offshore remain significant.
