Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province and China's most important inland city, home to approximately 13 million residents in the municipality. Like all of China, it operates on China Standard Time (CST, UTC+8). Wuhan sits at the confluence of the Yangtze and Han rivers — one of China's most strategically significant geographic positions — and has been a major transportation, commercial, and military hub for centuries. The city became globally known in late 2019 as the initial epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic, which spread from there to cause one of the most significant global health crises in modern history. Wuhan's Wuhan Institute of Virology is one of China's leading BSL-4 biosafety laboratories. The city played a pivotal role in the 1911 Revolution (Xinhai Revolution) that overthrew the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China — the Wuchang Uprising began here on October 10, 1911. Wuhan is also home to over 80 universities, including Wuhan University, one of China's most prestigious.
