Xi'an (formerly Chang'an) is the capital of Shaanxi province and one of the world's oldest cities, home to approximately 13 million residents. Like all of China, it operates on China Standard Time (CST, UTC+8). Xi'an was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and served as China's capital for over 1,100 years across 13 dynasties — longer than any other city in Chinese history. It was the world's most populous city during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), with a population of over one million inside its city walls. The Terracotta Army, discovered in 1974 near Xi'an, is one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century — approximately 8,000 life-sized clay soldiers, horses, and chariots built to guard the tomb of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang. The ancient city walls of Xi'an, built in the Ming Dynasty, are the most complete surviving city walls in China. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652 AD, housed Buddhist scriptures brought from India by the monk Xuanzang.
